ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT - The primary purpose of the organization is centered within an academic department or program at Syracuse University.
ART AND ENTERTAINMENT - Organizations with the primary purpose of creating and/or the presentation of visual arts, student performances, or events and programs featuring off-campus talent.
CULTURAL/INTERNATIONAL - Organizations that offer opportunities to explore cultural, social, and service aspects of various cultural and international groups.
GOVERNANCE - Organizations whose primary purpose includes serving as a representative of the student body to the University community and/or providing advice to the University faculty and administration.
HONORARY - An organization that promotes scholastic excellence and deep involvement in various academic areas.
MEDIA/PUBLICATIONS - Organizations whose members practice the creation and presentation of print, broadcast, or electronic media.
POLITICAL/ADVOCACY - Any organization whose primary purpose and activities support or oppose any specific ideology, political thought, or cause.
PROFESSIONAL - Organizations whose purpose and activities help prepare students for particular professions after graduation.
RELIGIOUS - Any organization that has as a primary purpose the activity of worship, devotion, prayer, mediation, or study of religious concepts or that requires membership affiliation or shared beliefs with a group generally recognized as a religion, or that furthers or opposes a religious ideology.
SERVICE - Organizations that provide a learning opportunity for students in the area of community service and volunteering for the University and Syracuse communities.
SOCIAL OR SERVICE FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES - Those private, national, or international, voluntary social associations that meet all of the following criteria:

The sponsoring body is a legal corporation and a member of the appropriate national or international governing body

The organization is recognized by its respective governing body at Syracuse University

The organization is recognized by Syracuse University

The organization is formed around goals which are social, service, and/or fraternal in nature, rather than honorary, professional, religious, or political

The organization prohibits members from joining more than one fraternal organization at a time
SPECIAL INTEREST - These organizations offer students opportunities to get involved in a variety of activities not generally offered in any other category.
SPORTS/RECREATION - The primary purpose of the membership is to participate in, or educate members about, a sport or other physical activity.
